By definition, a Swedish massage is a system of therapeutic massages and exercises for the muscles and joints, developed in Sweden in the 19th century.

Swedish Massage
The technique uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage and relax muscles. It works by applying pressure to the body’s outer layer of muscles in order to reach the deeper set of muscles and bones. The strokes are masterfully applied by rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart.
The results are amazing. Swedish massage has been shown to:
- Shorten recovery time from muscular strain by flushing the tissues of lactic acid, uric acid and other metabolic wastes
- Increase circulation without increasing heart load
- Stretch the ligaments and tendons keeping them supple and pliable
- Reduce pain, joint stiffness and improve function in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee over a period of eight weeks
- Stimulate the skin and nervous system while at the same time soothing the nerves
- Reduce emotional and physical stress
- Swedish massage is suggested in a regular program for stress management
Shiatsu Massage
The purpose of this delicate, yet simple practice is to maintain the body’s good health by warding off illness. Practioners use manipulative techniques and hand pressure to correct the imbalances of the body and enhance the body’s energy flow.
The view of Traditional Chinese Medicine is that energy; “chi” circulates along channels called meridians. Free flowing chi brings strong fresh energy and carries away spent energy together with toxins. For example, headache, sleeplessness, or depression is all viewed as blocked or diverted chi, which must be cleared and restored through the circulation of good chi.
Cassiope Salon’s trained shiatsu masseuse works in harmony with the body’s chi. By using the palms, fingers and thumbs, our masseuse will apply a still, relaxed pressure at various points on the body.
The results are profound and numerous. In general, a shiatsu massage has been known to promote a greater sense of health and well being by adjusting the body’s physical structure and its natural inner energies. Specifically, it may be beneficial for:
Reflexology
Reflexology is considered to be a holistic healing technique that aims to treat the individual as a whole, in order to induce a state of balance and harmony in body, mind and spirit.
The technique is based on the belief that there are reflex areas on the feet and hands corresponding to all the parts of the body, including major organs. It is believed that applying pressure to specific areas on the feet, hands and ears may affect internal organs and body systems, and therefore promote good health.

Pain and sensitivity is the body’s method of alerting us of ailments. An ailment indicates energy blockage. However, after about 10 – 30 minutes of reflexology massage, a client may experience relief in areas of blockage because energy channels begin opening and the body’s internal healing power is activated.
Cassiope Salon respects the fact that each person has a unique response to reflexology and on occasion may experience a variety of short-term reactions, such as, extreme relaxation, tiredness, lethargy or tearfulness.
